Naoto Fuchigami Solo Exhibition "Standing on Strangeness: We're Only Human"
GINZA SIX GINZA TSUTAYA BOOKS Art Wall(Tokyo)

Exhibition Statement
In an era where ambiguous and conflicting information overwhelms us, people tend to categorize and label even one another—trying to define everything in absolute terms.
We fall into the illusion of grasping something certain, indulge in instant gratification, and gradually lose our sense of richness and depth.
I take ultra-precise, technologically crystallized products and process them back into fragments and powder of silicon—returning them to mere matter.
As I reflect on their components and smallest units, I am struck by their beauty and reminded that we are, after all, only human.

Artist Statement
My work explores the structure of the material world and its strangeness, as well as humanity's relationship with it, from a microscopic perspective—focusing on atoms, molecules, and other fundamental elements that make up our reality.
Phenomena and principles that emerge in the microscopic world are widely applied in fields such as semiconductor technology, chemistry, biology, and medicine. Yet these same principles often defy human intuition, reaching into the philosophical realm of interpretation.
I was deeply moved by the strange and wondrous properties of the building blocks of our world, which sparked my curiosity about the true nature and essence of reality. This curiosity led me to study quantum physics, and ultimately, inspired my creative practice.
In my representative body of work, the ℏ Series, I incorporate crushed silicon wafers—the raw material of IC chips and semiconductors.
Semiconductors are the backbone of our information-driven society, yet they are made possible by leveraging properties of matter that defy human perception and intuition. By using semiconductors in my work, I aim to explore and express the relationship between humanity and the material world.
To depict a microscopic world that lies beyond our senses, I conceptually connect with it through materials that bear direct relevance. I also strive to evoke the mystery and eeriness of a world composed of such strange elements.
The act of crushing semiconductors symbolizes the limitations of human intellect and perception in comprehending the material universe. It is also an expression of awe and reverence toward the cosmos.
In a time when opportunities for deep thinking are slowly disappearing, I attempt to subvert the values of convenience and efficiency—embodied by the semiconductor—by transforming it into art that encourages contemplation.
With a unique perspective rooted in physics, I explore new possibilities in artistic expression using ready-made materials and products not typically regarded as art supplies.
